Record Cleaning FAQs

Do your products improve sound quality?

They absolutely will. Any audiophile knows that cleaning your vinyl collection is crucial. When dirt or dust collects on records, it can interfere with the sound quality and cause songs to skip. Dusty records can also contaminate your turntable, spreading the dirt to other vinyl too. So not only will cleaning them make everything sound crisp, but it will also keep your entire collection in perfect condition.

Do your products remove scratches?

Unfortunately, no. Our products are designed to help you remove dust particles, dirt, and any micro-contaminations on the surface of the record. We simply cleanse your vinyl so your sound quality remains sharp and clear.

What are the ingredients in the cleaning solution?

Our cleaning solution is made with water and minimal amounts of (ready for it?) polyoxyethylene lauryl ether and disodium edetate dihydrate preservatives. Okay, we know that may not mean much to you if you’re not a chemist. But what it means is that our cleaning solutions are made without any alcohol.

Washing records with regular water and soap is not recommended, and neither are cleaning solutions containing alcohol. Alcohol can strip away the protective coating on records and damage the vinyl over time. Fortunately, our cleaning solution is gentle, and all it takes is one small mist per record to use. We expect our XL bottle to last you a while, but in case you run out, you can easily buy our refills.

Do you have to use distilled water with the Record Friend?

Yes, it’s important to make sure you’re using distilled water. Regular old tap water can leave mineral deposits in the grooves of your vinyl over time. Some people who live in “soft” water areas think they can get away with using their tap water, but it’s best not to risk it. Distilled water is cheap and easy to find at most grocery or convenience stores.

Can you purchase additional or replacement brushes for the Record Friend?

Of course! You can purchase additional or replacement brushes directly from Big Fudge. We manufacture our brushes to be long-lasting, so you can expect to get a lot of use out of them before needing any replacements.

How does the Stylus Gel work?

Place the stylus gel underneath the needle and then carefully lower the tonearm into the gel. Repeat this twice, and voila. You’ve successfully removed dust and dirt.

As long as you take proper care of the gel by keeping it covered and out of direct sunlight, it can last for years! (Depending on how often you use it, of course).

How does the Vinyl Roller cleaner work?

If you’re short on time, then this vinyl roller cleaner is perfect for you. The Record Pal works just like a lint roller does by pulling dust off vinyl records in five seconds tops. We use a special non-adhesive gel that quickly picks up any contaminants without leaving any sticky residues behind.

The best part is that you can use this roller cleaner on any other glass-top surface. It’s great for computer screens, phone screens, or even cabinets. Cleaning the record pal is no problem either -- after a few uses, run the roller under warm water to rinse off all the dust. Once dried, it’s ready to be used again and again.

Do I need to use the microfiber towel to dry the records on my own?

Nope! While you certainly can if you’re in a pinch, our drying rack can hold up to 10 records at a time to ensure a bone-dry shine.
